Dayton Dynamo Fall to Michigan Stars FC

The Dayton Dynamo closed out the NPSL regular season with a loss to Michigan Stars FC on Friday night at Welcome Stadium in Dayton, Ohio. The home side got on the scoreboard first, but Michigan rallied to take a 3-1 victory. Alexander Serwatka came off the bench to be the shining Star of the evening.

Dayton played with a man advantage for nine minutes in the early going when Eric Mcwoods went down with an injury. The Dynamo could do little to create chances during that span. Mcwoods returned to the match in the 16th minute, but was quickly replaced by Serwatka.

Serwatka’s impact on the game was felt almost immediately, almost giving the Stars a lead nine minutes after entering. He got behind the Dynamo back line and attempted to slot the ball into the far side of the net. His shot rolled just wide of the post.

One minute later, Dayton made the most of a mistake by the visitors. A Stars defender passed the ball back to his keeper, who was already under pressure by Maik Schoonderwoerd. The goalkeeper attempted to get rid of the ball, but Schoonderwoerd was able to gain possession and deposit the ball into an empty net.

The Dynamo had an excellent chance to double the lead on a set piece in the 40th minute. Kebe Baye rolled the free kick to Krhisty Pinto, who was unmarked to the right of the wall. Dwyer sent the ball in to Schoonderwoerd, but the big forward sailed the ball over the crossbar.

The remainder of the first half belonged to Michigan. Serwatka got behind the Dynamo back line again, thanks to a well-placed through ball. Serwatka found Adin Kavara making a run to the far post, and Kavara finished from point blank range in the 42nd minute.

The Serwatka show continued in the 45th minute. The forward benefited from a Dynamo turnover at the center stripe and raced down the field. One cut to the left was enough to get by defender Christian Johnson. The finish was elementary.

In the second half, the Stars picked right up where they left off in the first half. Pressure created opportunities, and Michigan capitalized in the 61st minute. It was Kavara again, finishing after a low cross found him in the middle of the box.

The result gave Michigan the series sweep against Dayton. The Stars beat the Dynamo 3-0 in Pontiac on June 17.

This was the final regular season match in the Dynamo’s inaugural regular season in Dayton. The Dynamo finished at the bottom of the NPSL Great Lakes West Division. The Stars will finish their season on the road against Detroit City FC on July 15.
