The Carolina Challenge Cup returned to MUSC Health Stadium in 2017 after a hiatus in 2016. The USL’s Charleston Battery hosted MLS sides Columbus Crew SC, Atlanta United FC, and Seattle Sounders FC in the preseason round-robin tournament. Columbus won the tournament on the strength of two wins and a draw.

Niko Hansen, assisted by Wil Trapp, scored the only goal of the match, and it clinched the championship for Columbus. The clean sheet was the only one posted during the tournament.
Charleston Battery 1-2 Atlanta United FC
Atlanta’s Yamil Asad netted a goal in the early minutes off a cross from Mikey Ambrose. Charleston got an equalizer from Romario Williams before intermission, but a stoppage time goal from Tito Villalba gave the victory to Atlanta in the waning moments.
